How old were you when you found your passion for taking photos and what sparked your interest in photography?
I used to skate a lot with all my friends. That’s all we did. We would skate morning to night in high school. A bunch of my friends and I were skating and I ended up shattering my knee cap. So after I got injured all my friends kept going and one of my friends went pro, so I basically just shot photos all the time.

One of my friend’s fathers was a huge mentor of mine, Erik Castillo. He unfortunately passed away in a skateboarding accident. At his funeral there weren’t a lot of photos of him. So it got me thinking, I might lose some friends along the way, so i might as well start shooting photos of them. I was 15 when I started doing that. By my senior year in high school I ended up having ads run in Thrasher, Transworld, and in Skateboarder magazine.

What are your biggest influences in photography?
Right now, it’s the people around me. The culture. My boss Misha pushes me to shoot a lot of concerts and that gives me a lot of access. But mainly my inspiration just comes from everyone around me.

What are your favorite subjects to shoot?
People. I love shooting people. Growing up in Santa Cruz it was all skateboarding that i shot. but now in SF its all people. Drunk parties, even portraits. I like shooting people.

What inspires you to keep shooting photos everyday?
The hope of making it as a professional photographer is what keeps me going. I also like my friends reactions. It’s cool to be able to look back since a sophomore in high school and see everything that I’ve documented. I took photos of shit you wouldn’t remember. Everything from bus rides to the bay to breakers to high school graduation parties. They’re all memories I had from when I was a kid and its great to look back on everything.

What have been some of the obstacles you’ve had to overcome to get to where you are now?
Time for one. It takes a long time to not only learn how to use the camera properly. I’ve never taken a photo class before besides an introductory film development class when I was sophomore in high school that taught me how to develop film in a dark room. Other than that, I’m mostly self-taught. I also think some of the biggest obstacles are just finding the connections to work in the industry and keeping those connections happy. Its one thing to find the connections and it’s another to follow through and have good finished product every time. Consistency is the hardest part.

What does “BUILD YOUR DIENASTY” mean to you?
I see my dienasty as everything I’ve accomplished. All the fun I’ve had and all the friends I’ve made. It’s about the experience that comes along with taking the pictures. Its led me to a lot of friends and makes the best out of what ive got. I have a ton of fun right now and its all about documenting the fun, keeping it going.

What makes San Francisco such a great city for what you do?
There are different people everywhere you look and for the most part people are friendly here. If you go to New York you get brushed off. It’s a crazy rat race everywhere, but in sf people are happier here and I like that.

You’ve taken pictures for some pretty big names in the music industry. Who are your favorites that you have met along the way?
I got to meet Cyprus Hill at Rock the Bells and Foster The People at Outside Lands. Iv gotten to hang out with Del the Funky Homosapien a few times. it was his wife’s birthday and I got to hang out with her back stage i just kicked it with them. I’ve always liked Hieroglyphics

Lately it seems as if your shooting photos at all of the biggest events in the area. What have been your favorites?
Lets see, smashing pumpkins a month ago in Oakland was really cool. I grew up listening to them, so to see them on a reunion tour up close was really cool. EDC with all my friends was awesome, I’m not a huge electronic fan but at that event we had an all access pass so we just got to run around like crazy. That was probably one of my favorite times, along with Coachella!

What are some events you hope to work in the future?
I want to do Coachella again, it was so much fun. It was weird the last time I went since I didn’t have a media pass. This year I’m going to try to get the media pass so I don’t have to hide my camera the whole time. I want to go and shoot Lollapalooza in Chicago too. But we’ll work on that one.. we’ll see!

3 years ago, when the concept of DIENASTY SELECT was in its premature stages, Jeremy Poincenot was a normal college kid. Only about 6 months into the beginning stages of DNS, Jeremy began noticing a change in his vision. He began asking the rest of the DNS crew to help him read road signs and markers. I clearly remember him telling me, “dude, I think I need glasses or something.” After months and months of testing, Jeremy was diagnosed with LHON: a rare hereditary disease which causes a slow loss in sight.

During the making of our Spring 2010 collection, MTV’s True Life followed Jeremy through his everyday routine and documented how he deals with and also takes advantage of his situation. Jeremy is an inspration to everyone around the company and we’re continually motivated by him to continue to follow our passion and Build our Dienasty no matter what the circumstances.

Besides the clothing being on point, I am really attracted to DNS’s concept. DNS is not just a clothing line, but it’s a lifestyle ya know? It’s an enterprise that continues to grow. I can relate the vision of DNS to that of our record label Rockstar Muzik. Both Dienasty Select and Rockstar Muzik share visions of always being determined and steady on our grind to chase our dreams and make shit happen. You know what I’m talking about, just Building your Dienasty in any way possible.

What in childhood has led you on the path that you are on today?

Well growing up with 3 older sisters and 1 older brother, I was easily influenced to good music at a young age. They introduced me to music such as Biggie, Tupac, and Bone Thugs n Harmony so my passion for music began to grow at a young age. I can recall times listening to a Tupac or Biggie track and having my older brother come in and change the track, I would get so upset that I’d start to cry like a little bitch haha.

Who are you mostly listening to today?

I mostly listen to Rockstar Muzik’s very own, Kidd Upstairs. Besides him I also am listening to Rick Ross, Wale, 9^th Wonder, J. Cole, and I’m starting to catch up on Little Brother.

Do you listen to other music besides hip-hop?

I am all about buying music legally, ya know, I love music and support other artists and their work, but as far as other genres of music I mostly fuck with hip hop. If other shit is on I will listen to it, I just don’t really want to pay for it right now ha. I do like Coldplay, but I don’t even know what genre they would be haha, maybe rock alternative?

At what point did you get the determination and drive to make it as a rapper?

I think it was after a show we had at the Cellar in Long Beach. I was with Nick, Brandon, and since it was in Long Beach we weren’t expecting a huge fan base. The few that were coming from were from all over. We got there and performed with the crowd against us, but as soon as we started to perform, we straight rocked the show and the crowd loved us.

I also did a Warner Bros Showcase last November which recruited acts from all over. I was fortunate enough to have won that shit and it really helped me get motivated. That motivation has turned into dropping new mixtapes whenever I can. Looking at Curren$y and how he blew up, always dropping new mixtapes, I try to immolate his work ethic.

How are your skills progressing? What do you do to make yourself progress?

I try to write to different beats or different characters. You look at the rap game and you have so many different rappers with different styles and swag such as Drake or Eminem. I try to immolate different styles and see what I can do with it. For example, the other day I started writing like Tyler The Creator, you know real dark and evil themed, and I found that I was able to do that. It’s all about mixing and matching and seeing what sticks, then when it does, go for it.

What obstacles do you think are in your way?

Every Trying to get your name out there. Lack of exposure. Everyone is caught up with main stream, if your not talking about Bentley’s and fuckin bitches, then its hard to get people to listen to you. San diego doesn’t really have a hip hop scene, so maybe can be the location.

Why do you think San Diego doesn’t have a hip hop scene? What does it need? What is it lacking?

The ethnic make-up could affect the scene and maybe the demographics, but what I’ve noticed in San Diego is more people are into the raging, party scene. You go to any club or bar and your likely to be exposed to a more techno, electro, house, dubstep scene.

What influences you other than hip hop? Creatively?

Life, life life…life experiences. The parties, the girls, the ambition.

In high school, my parents wanted me to become a doctor because my Dad had his Ph.d. That shit never interest me. I always got good grades in school, but once again, I didn’t have a passion for it. I never had an extremely strong interest for anything, until I found music. It’s all I ever want to do. I was searching for a long time for something I love and this is what it is– no one can tell me what I can and can’t do ya feel me? It’s all mine.

What is your vision of greatness for yourself?

I would say doing what I want to do for the rest of my life and providing for myself and my family when the time comes I decide to start a family. I have always been interested in traveling and seeing the world and experiencing new places and people. Having my music take me there when the time comes will help define my vision of greatness. Lastly, I’d say having people remember me when I’m gone, to never be forgotten.
